Responsibility

The overall aim of the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences’ Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Committee Race Equality Sub-committee is to raise issues and awareness within the College with a focus on race equality. The sub-committee brings together staff to identify, discuss, advise on, and take forward all aspects of policy and its implementation. The sub-committee will stimulate and build good practice and innovation relating to race equality and will provide advice and make recommendations to the College Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Committee (CEIDC), to ensure that the College develops and shares best practice.

The Committee will report to CEIDC. CEIDC is represented on, and reports to, the College Management Group. Items and recommendations related to race equality for discussion at CMG, will be provided via CEIDC.

The Equality Act 2010 defines race as including colour, nationality and ethnic or national origins.

Remit

  • To support and advise the College in meeting its obligations under the Equality Act 2010. This group will be responsible for the following Protected Characteristics (PCs): Race.
  • To promote cultural change whereby equality for students, staff and visitors is embedded in all College functions and activities.
  • To support the development and implementation of the College’s plan to address the action arising from the University’s Understanding Racism Transforming University Culture Report.
  • To be cognisant of Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter (REC) and its progression. To use the REC framework to inform future work.
  • To act as a channel of communication where race equality issues can be raised and addressed or referred to appropriate bodies for action.
  • To consider intersectional aspects in relation to race, sex, and gender – in line with other equality groups.
  • To review its membership and remit annually and to co-opt additional representative members to the sub-committee as may be required.

Reporting line

The College Equality Inclusion and Diversity Committee but liaising widely with other committees and managers as required.

Membership

The RESC may invite others to attend meetings on an ad hoc basis where this would help to expedite its work. In addition, the RESC may co-opt individuals with specific expertise as members in order to deal with specialist items of business, but not to fulfil a representative function.

Where a member is unable to attend, a nominee would be desirable. The Group will meet 4 times per year.

Decolonising the Curriculum and Embedding EDI in the Curriculum Working Group

The remit of the Decolonising the Curriculum Working Group aligns with the University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Strategy (2021 – 2025), notably to reflect our values of inclusivity, wellbeing, integrity and respect in our learning and curriculum design through decolonising the curriculum, embedding our Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy and engaging in student-staff partnerships to facilitate co-creation (Pillar 2, Transforming curricula and assessment).

Decolonising the curriculum is an ongoing process that assesses and contextualises the arguments and assumptions of Western thought within all disciplines and asks us to consider the incorporation of historically marginalised and suppressed knowledge.  It does not deliver a set of prescriptions but is instead offers a set of suggestions and ideas for colleagues and students to think through, both individually and collectively. It also requires that we build a culture in which diversity and inclusive practice is promoted.

The composition of the working group consists of the:

  • MVLS Race Equality Subcommittee Committee Lead (Chair)
  • Chair of MVLS CEIDC
  • Representatives from all teaching areas (UG and PG) in MVLS

The objectives of the working group:

  • Deliver/facilitate talks on what decolonising the curriculum means in the College of MVLS and showcase work ongoing in the schools within the College
  • Invite internal and external speakers to discuss their accomplishments in decolonising the curriculum
  • Liaise and collaborate with the University of Glasgow Decolonising the Curriculum Community of Practice
  • Host decolonising the curriculum events to disseminate examples of good practice to the wider community
